The Commarts Band

On May 26, 2008, a new batch of Communication Arts students arrived in De La Salle University. The 'band', as I dubbed late in our sophomore year, were still unknown to each other. Over time, however, the band were starting to get along, although in the first two terms, we were restricted to five blocks: LR17, LR19, LR21, LC18 and LC20. It was only in the third term that the band finally broke loose. No longer restricted to their respective blocks, we started to befriend fellow commarts majors from other blocks. And it all came together during our sophomore year.

But in those first two terms, it wasn't easy breaking through. We had to follow a schedule, as we were excluded from the online enrollment procedures, and we have to attend the same classes as a block. We also had to take three P.E. classes and two NSTP classes. There were times that our egos get the best of us. And there were times that our fellow blockmates reach a breaking point. But despite a difficult and arduous adjustment, we were able to overcome those egos and reach out together. When we finally have the chance to break through in our third term, the rest is all history.

The band was officially christened on May 25, 2009, after passing HUMALIT and SPEECOM, the subjects needed to earn the majors. However, some of our blockmates either shifted or were delayed in their studies. Krystal Go, Ivy Aquino, Christine Ong and AK Paras shifted to other courses, while Bimbo Sarmiento and Mark Demayo were delayed, having failed ENGLRES in second term. And we were joined by higher-level students who were either delayed or were shifted, such as Roniel Conise, AJ Salcedo, Steffi Amoranto, Mark Canteras, Camille Barrios, Clarie Aguilar, Andrew Dacay, Erika Siquian, Marika Callangan, to name a few. Other than that, the band was complete.

The band, however, had to endure first term blues in overcoming the first obstacle. That includes the oft-dreaded, but well-respected Mrs. Judy Sibayan, who taught MASSCOM in our first term majors and were forced to do all the summaries within four months. Our introductory courses INTBROD, INTFILM and INTPRIN were just a sign of things to come. As the second and third terms followed, more challenges arose, but the band never backed down. Now on the verge of working for the thesis, the band is still striving to work hard to finish the course.

This blog and the succeeding blogs will follow the band's journey from the past up to the present. Enjoy.
